Lake Orion’s varsity baseball team continued league play on May 10 with a doubleheader against Rochester Adams.
In game one the Dragons lost a heart breaker to the Highlanders after losing the lead late for a 5-4 loss.
The Dragons had a hard time scoring; only plating runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings and tallying six hits total.
In game two against the Highlanders, the Dragons managed a quick response to the previous loss with a 4-1 win.
Pitching for Lake Orion was Hunter Sites who only surrendered one run on five hits over five and two-thirds innings, while striking out six.
Kobe Manzo, Matt Williams, Chris Hege and Josh Slayton all hits for the Dragons. Brendan Britt, Slayton, Manzo and Hege each drove in runs.
May 11, the boys gave a dominating performance defeating Northville 11-1 in game one of another doubleheader.
The win was greatly attributed to Lake Orion’s six runs in the first inning alone where Ryan McClellan, Sites and Nate O’Connor each had RBIs (Run Batted In).
Teddy Hirschfield pitched three innings for the Dragons allowing only one run on three hits, striking out three and walking one.
Drew Van Heck, O’Connor and Mitch Howell all had multiple hits for the Dragons.
In game two the Dragons were quick out of the gate but were unable to keep the lead losing to Northville 2-5.
The Dragon offense tallied seven hits. Hege and Jared Stross led the team with multiple hits.
Lake Orion narrowly defeated Rochester High School on May 13 with a score of 4-3.
The game was tied at three with Lake Orion batting in the bottom of eighth when Van Heck lead off the inning with a double. Britt was intentionally walked and Manzo singled to left-center driving in Van Heck to win the game.
May 14 the Dragons again defeated the Rochester Falcons 6-5.
The game came down to an extra inning with both teams tied at five at the end of the ninth.
They started off the game by scoring three runs in the first inning, which was highlighted by a two-run double by Slayton.
The boys held a 4-1 lead going into the seventh when the Falcons tied it up with three runs of their own.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth keeping the game tied until the bottom of the tenth when, after two outs, Howell managed to get to first on an error followed by Stross who was intentionally walked.
Rochester attempted a pick off play at first base but the ball got by the fielder and Howell scored all the way from second to secure the win.
The Dragons had 11 hits in the game. Manzo, Van Heck and Hirschfield each managed multiple hits for Lake Orion.
Lake Orion improves to 18-9 overall and 8-4 in the OAA. — M.K.
