The Oxford Varsity girls volleyball team’s season came to an abrupt end Friday night at the district finals against Clarkston.
The Wildcats started the game out uncharacteristically slow and were down two games to the Wolves before they knew it.
Oxford didn’t start showing signs of life until the third match, where they defeated Clarkston 25-21.
In game four, the girls were up 22-20, then Clarkston stepped up 23-22. The game was neck-and-neck until the Wolves took advantage of Oxford’s hitting errors, earning them the district title.
‘That was rough,? said Coach Kristi McDevitt. ‘We had it in our sights, and if we would have taken that fourth game, I know our momentum would have carried us on to the title.?
Junior captain Brittany Moncrieff finished with 19 kills, 26 digs and 20 for 23 passing. Senior captain Karlyn Stroope had 16 kills and senior Rachael Precour had seven.
Senior captain and libero Jacqui Sylva contributed 37 digs and sophomore Taylor Carpenter had 19 digs and was 10 for 12 passing.
Coach McDevitt wants to give a ‘special thanks? to the huge crowd that came out to support the girls Friday night.
Oxford finished their season 34-10-2. McDevitt said the team has had a lot to be thankful for.
‘This was just an amazing group of young women to work with and we accomplished so many of our goals together,? she said.
I can’t believe our eight seniors will be leaving us, but they did everything right. They worked hard every day and they mustn’t forget ? they have a league championship to be very proud of.?
