The North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy is trying a new fundraiser this year called the Poker Run Road Rally and Dinner.
The event is scheduled for Sunday, July 27 and offers a unique journey to enjoy the natural lands. Participants will visit five sites within the 42 properties that comprise the 1,000 acres that NOHLC currently protects. The individuals collect a playing card at each site and at the end of the rally they present their best poker hand for prizes, including a $500 grand prize.
‘We have heard of other organizations holding these type of fundraisers so we thought it would work great here,? Administrative Coordinator Karen Krigbaum said. ‘This will allow people to get a good look at North Oakland County and see how pretty it is.?
The Conservancy is hoping for at least 100 people to participate. It is not a timed event and not a race. Participants will drive to each of the properties.
‘Everybody will be given verbal directions but there will be no map and no clues,? Krigbaum said. ‘It is an opportunity to get out and see our property. However, this is not for antique cars. I have received numerous inquiries about that but these are bumpy, country roads.?
The festivities begin at the Springfield Township Civic Center in Davisburg with registration at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and includes dinner at the Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club in Clarkston. Dinner is scheduled for 5 p.m.
All proceeds will benefit the North Oakland Headwaters Land Conservancy. Call NOHLC’s office at (248) 846-6547 for reservations and more information.
‘The Poker Run Road Rally is a wonderful way to rediscover our natural heritage,? NOHLC Executive Director Susan Topping said. ‘We are fortunate that northwest Oakland County is rich in ecological diversity and an economic asset to the greater Detroit area. You can have a fun afternoon with your friends, enjoy dinner at the Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club and try your luck with a winning poker hand.?
