Comprehensive Women’s Health: understanding your needs from A to Z

The Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) field has changed so much over the years that some women may be leery of newer treatments that are available.
One thing that hasn’t changed for Comprehensive Women’s Health of Oxford, though, is their dedication in helping you get the best care possible and helping you understand your choices when it comes to treatment.
Dr. Lana Powell, M.D., opened her practice in Oxford this past February and serves women from all over Oakland County.
Comprehensive Women’s Health offers extensive OB/GYN services, like in-office ultrasounds and fetal monitoring, infertility evaluations, high-risk obstetrical care, endometrial ablation, laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy, diagnostic and operative laparoscopy, just to name a few.
Dr. Powell is a board-certified OB/GYN who is an active member of the attending staff of the William Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak and Troy. She is a member of the Obstetrical Quality Assurance Committee at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
Before returning to Beaumont where she completed her residency in 2002, Dr. Powell was a faculty physician at the University of Michigan, specializing in general OB/GYN, with a special interest in breast disease.
‘OB/GYN was always the right fit for me,? Dr. Powell said, adding that she loves the relationships she forms with her patients.
‘You deal with their birth control, see them get pregnant, deliver their babies, and then address their gynecological issues, such as hormonal and surgical management, as necessary,? she said. ‘You take care of women at all stages of their life.?
Although she enjoys every aspect of her occupation, Dr. Powell gets the most joy out of delivering babies. She’s delivered approximately 1,500 so far.
‘It’s so much fun,? she said. ‘I can’t imagine doing anything else.?
Unlike 20 years ago, when the OB/GYN field saw a hysterectomy as the only option for most women, Comprehensive Women’s Health knows surgery is not the only option.
Some problems can be managed medically or with endometrial ablation. If surgery is required, the minimally invasive laproscopic surgery helps women recover in a shorter period of time.
‘It’s about looking for what we can do to solve the problem with the very least disruption to your life,? Dr. Powell said. ‘I never operate until I know it’s absolutely necessary. ?
Cysts, ovaries and the uterus can be removed laproscopically through one’s belly button, therefore minimizing any scarring.
To accommodate all her client’s needs, Dr. Powell offers early morning hours and evening hours on Thursdays.
‘It’s nice because it gives options to working women and allows husbands to come with their wives after work,? she said.
