Independence Township and City of the Village of Clarkston formed a District Library Committee to pursue creation of a new district library for the Clarkston area.
Its first step: agree on a millage rate. This was where negotiations between the city and township fell apart in 1992, according to Independence Township Library Director Julie Meredith.
‘The township wanted 1.75 mills and the city wanted 1.25 mills,? she said at the March 20 Independence Township Board meeting. ‘The current millage rate is 0.691, which brings in $982,009.?
The committee will discuss millage rates from 1-1.5 mills. A single mill would bring in an estimated $1.4 million, while 1.25 mills would bring in about $1.8 million; 1.38 mills would bring in $2.0 million; and 1.5 mills, $2.1 million.
Representatives on the committee from Independence Township include Trustee Neil Wallace, Superintendent Bart Clark, and residents Janice Gaffney and Marilyn Pomeroy. City representatives include Mayor Joe Luginski, Councilman Eric Haven, and residents Mary Himberg and Ann Rose.
The current library is run by Independence Township. A district library would be governed by both the township and Clarkston.
