Oxford Firefighters and Oakland County Sheriff Office deputies responded to a call of a residential structure fire at 12:26 p.m.
Firefighters carried the fire hose to the roof above the garage at a home on the 200 block of Cross Timbers Drive.
They contained the fire within 15 minutes of arrival.
The homeowner was repairing a van for a friend in the garage
He tried to remove the tranmission pan but could not get his wrench in the space. He started his cutting torch to cut grooves in the transmission pan. The space would allow the wrench to fit.
While he was cutting into the pan the van caught on fire.
He attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher that was in the garage, but the fire was too big. He went inside of the house to get another extinguisher.
When he returned to the garage it was filled with smoke as the fire spread from the van to the garage.
He called 9-1-1 and requested the fire department.
The firefighters were able to contain it to the garage and keep it from spreading to the rest of the house.
The homeowner was checked and he said he had trouble breathing. He added he felt okay and didn’t want to go to the hospital.
There were no injuries.
Fire Chief Pete Scholz requested the OSCO Fire Investigation Unit to look into the incident. The investigation is on-going.
