Junior Brad Schultz led the Wolves in their big finish last week as they shut out the Broncos at Holly High School on Thursday, 5-0.
Schultz scored two goals to help the team in their win as sophomores Joey DeFinis, Jimmy Todd and junior Alex Trim added one goal each to the game.
“We controlled the game for the most part,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Chuck Lawhorn. “I had the starters play half of each half and the guys coming off the bench did a really nice job. They created a lot of scoring opportunities as well but we didn’t finish them.”
Sophomore Grant Gotaas had three saves during the night.
“We went in there and did what we were supposed to do, and we did a good job,” Lawhorn said. “We were getting a lot of shots on goal.”
He contributed the win to the boys’ response to their loss at Stoney Creek for a second time on Sept. 18.
“We have been working on our touch and our movement on the ball,” he said. “It was a lot better Thursday than Tuesday.”
The boys lost to the Cougars, 4-2.
The Wolves opened the game with a goal from Schultz. After teammate senior Ryan Mangapora took his shot on goal. The ball was caught by the goalie, but it dropped out of his hands.
Schultz swept in and finished the opportunity Mangapora earlier provided.
The Cougars tied the score by the end of the first half. They scored two more goals in the second half before Clarkston scored again.
The second goal came from Schultz again with an assist from junior Zach McCallum.
“I also think the way Stoney Creek played may have had something to do with the way we were moving the ball on Tuesday,” Lawhorn added. “I thought it was a lot more improved on Thursday.”
The Wolves made a total of six shots on goal and senior goalie Harry Smith had nine saves.
The boys hostedWaterford Kettering on Tuesday as they looked to continue their goal scoring.
“They will come out strong,” Lawhorn said before the game. “They will be up for that game.”
They head to Lahser this Thursday.
“No league game is an easy game especially away from home,” said Lawhorn.
He added a strength going into the games is the team’s goal scoring.
“It has come alive,” said Lawhorn. “Not only with the five on Thursday but we had two against Stoney Creek. No one has scored two on them all year. We are definitely creating scoring opportunities and starting to finish them which is good to see. Hopefully we will continue that trend into this week.”
The Wolves head to Rochester Adams next Tuesday. Both away games start at 5:30 p.m. with JV, varsity follows.
