Banners considered for Goodrich downtown

The village may soon be a banner community.
For more than a year the Goodrich/Atlas Township Chamber of Commerce has been considering coordinating an effort to display on banners the names of area businesses on light poles in the downtown area of Goodrich.
Shirley Kautman Jones, Atlas Township Supervisor, proposed the plan to the village council on Monday night. The plan includes utilizing a two banner system on each pole’flying a seasonal flag such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Fourth of July. A second flag on the light poles would be the name of the business in the chamber.
‘However, not all the businesses in chamber are within the village of Goodrich limits,? said Jones. ‘That would be a violation of a village ordinance and considered an off-premise sign. In addition, Consumers Energy would have to OK the plan since it’s their lights on the poles.?
During the Christmas season, the light poles are used to display decorations put up by the Goodrich Lions Club.
‘It’s a real asset for the business owners and the chamber,? said Rick Horton, village council president. ‘Other communities in the area, such as Grand Blanc and Davison, have used the flags.?
The concept will now go to the planning commission for approval.
