Angels? Place Race this spring

Planning is underway for the eighth annual Angels’ Place Race, Saturday, May 16.
The springtime race event will include a 10-kilometer run, 5-kilometer Bruce Clifton Run/Walk, and one-mile Family Fun Walk, all through downtown Clarkston. Start and finish lines are at St. Daniel Catholic Church.
‘I enjoy the ambiance of the route and St. Dan’s is a major sponsor ? hosting it there is important,? said Paul Maxwell, Angels? Place Race organizer.
‘It wouldn’t be Bruce’s race if it’s not run on his course,? said Anne Clifton, Bruce’s wife.
Bruce, who passed away in 2011, designed the 5K course, Anne said.
“It’s great to see the residents and everyone come out and show their support. It’s a great event that has grown over the years,? she said.
It also kicks off the season for many runners, she said.
‘If you don’t run in the winter, this is something relatively early to motivate you to get out and train,? Anne said.
The main reason of the event is to raise awareness of developmentally disabled adults and Angels’ Place, Maxwell said.
The non-profit group supports these adults with programs and groups homes throughout the area. One goal locally is building a home in Clarkston.
‘The objective is to use the race funds to support a local home eventually,? Maxwell said. ‘It’s a ways away. There’s a lot of heavy lifting that has to be done.?
In addition to St. Dan’s church, local Knights of Columbus, businesses, and community groups provide volunteers and support before and during the event.
‘What makes this race successful is the great volunteer base,? Maxwell said. ‘An overwhelming amount of volunteers come out on race day.?
They will host a fund raiser for Angels? Place Race at the On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina, 3930 Baldwin Road, Auburn Hills, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., March 19.
