Alward named Coach of the Week

Coach Alward has been selected as the Detroit Lions/NFL Foundation/Farm Bureau ‘Coach of the Week? for Week six of the 2014 season.
‘We are very proud of Coach Alward’s accomplishment,? said Dave Davis, athletic director. ‘This is the latest honor in a string of accolades for Coach Alward.?
Alward was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013 and has served as the head coach at Goodrich for 22 seasons. In addition, Alward is 129-87 with the Martians and won league titles in 2004, 2008 and 2010. He is the winningest coach in Goodrich history.
‘It great honor to be named Coach of the Week,? said Alward. ‘I’m humbled and very excited to receive the money for the football program here at Goodrich’it will be put to good use.?
Each winning coach throughout the regular season will receive a $2,000 donation to his school’s football program. At the conclusion of the 2014 Michigan High School Football season, the Lions will also select the High School Football Coach of the Year.
During the 2014 nine-week high school football regular season, one coach that best develops his players? character, discipline, and football skill in addition to emphasizing player health and safety in their program, is recognized for his commitment to the team, school, and community. The winner is selected by a panel of high school football media members including Mick McCabe (Detroit Free Press), Hugh Bernreuter (Saginaw News), Bret Bakita (WOOD Radio-106.9 FM, ESPN 96.1 FM, Fox 17 TV/Grand Rapids), Scott DeCamp (Mlive.com/Muskegon) and James Cook (Traverse City Record-Eagle).
Alward and his Martians are currently 5-1 in the 2014 season and could lock up a playoff spot this weekend when they travel to Lake Fenton on Oct. 10.
‘It’s Lake Fenton’s homecoming, it should be a tough game for us on the road,? he said. We try to play basic football with sound techniques’we have to keep getting better each week and so far we have. However, we have not had our best game yet.?
