The weather and school closings have postponed games for athletes – but Mother Nature did not step in when the Wolves hosted Lake Orion, Jan. 21.
Clarkston froze out the visiting team for their eighth win of the season in the OAA crossover, 64-27.
Senior Nick Owens led the charge scoring his first of eight field goals 35 seconds into the game.
‘When he is in the zone he makes those shots,? said Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Dan Fife. ‘Those are good shots – that’s who he is, that is who he has been.?
Junior Josh Bonzheim scored on a basket before Owens scored another 3-pointer to put the boys into the lead 7-0.
David Henry put Lake Orion on the board with 6:12 left in the first quarter but the Wolves continued to build onto their lead, ending the quarter 23-8.
It was the third consecutive game the Wolves had held their opponents to below 40 points after they held North Farmington to 36 points and Pontiac to 26 points just before taking on Lake Orion.
‘We got out early,? Fife said. ‘It’s hard when a team is coming in and they are the underdog. It is hard for them to overcome that. Our kids came ready to play. We were good without making too many silly fouls.?
Junior Merrick Canada opened the second quarter with a basket, starting the 13-0 run for the Wolves. Within the run Owens scored two field goals and senior Alex Trim scored one to help boost the score.
The Dragons made a crawl back scoring nine points in the last five minutes of the half to put the score, 41-17.
Owens led the team with 30 points and junior Andrew Myers added eight points during the game.
With the lead, the Wolves were able to put in more guys from their bench including senior Andrew Swanson and sophomore Tabin Throgmorton, a transfer from Walled Lake Northern who just became eligible to play.
‘He is going to be a good player,? Fife noted about Throgmorton who played point guard with Walled Lake. ‘He has to get used to play with us. He has been asked to play different positions here. Not for any reason it’s just the way we are right now. It will make him multi-dimensional which will help him in the long run. I always think the more positions you can play the better opportunities you have to play.?
The Wolves (8-1) opened the week on Tuesday at Bloomfield Hills. They host Rochester on Friday. JV begins at 5:30 p.m.
