Get pampered for good cause

The waiting is over – the fifth annual Pink & Pampered event at McLaren Breast Center and McLaren Cancer Institute is Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5- 8 p.m.
The pampering starts with services like manicures, chair massages, eyebrow waxing, henna tattoos and more. All the services are $10 each or less.
A favorite for the event is back – the Recycled Bag Boutique. It includes donated purses for $3, $5 and $10. Over 200 purse donated to chose from this year.
“The bag boutique is a big draw,” said Mary Melega. “Many walk out with 5-10 purses they purchased.”
They will also have donated scarfs and pins this year, she said, as well as Barks for Scarfs, soy candles, wine cork keychains, heat rice bags and more.
“We will have smudge sticks made out of sage and lavender,” Melega added. “It is part of the folklore. If you light it and walk through your home it will get rid of the bad energy.”
Pink & Pampered has complementary food from Klever Kreations, Pita Way and coffee from Neiman’s Family Market.
They will also have a raffle. Prizes include a quilt, painting, bag from Clarkston Flower Shoppe, I Love Lucy cookie jar filled with chocolate, as well as gift certificates and more.
All proceeds from the event go towards transportation, health supplements, and food and gas cards for patients at the cancer institute.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month they are offering free breast cancer screenings from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Appointments are required so please call McLaren Breast Center at 248-922-6810 to make an appointment.
“We are very excited about it,” said Melega.
“It is just another reminder to not forget about clinical breast exams,” Carrie Bishop added.
The American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40; to have a clinical breast exam about every three years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women age 40 and older and should be performed by a health care provider.
Pink & Pampered is a partnership between Independence Township Senior Adult Activity Center, McLaren Breast Center and McLaren Cancer Institute.
