Tennis beats league foes

The Wolves only needed one more win to beat Rochester as Ian Stuart took to the court.
The win wouldn’t be easy as Stuart took on not only wet weather but a few court changes.
He lost the first set against Falcons’ Collin Perozich, 4-6. Then, the rain started pouring down and the decision was made to move to Lifetime Fitness where Stuart won the second match, 6-3.
“I was very pleased with Ian,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Chas Claus. “He knew the pressure was on him. He knew it was make or break time.”
The two moved to another court when the facility needed the one they were on and that is when Stuart sealed the win for Clarkston, 6-2. The Wolves finished with a 5-4 win over the Falcons.
“I was really glad how he stepped up with everyone from both teams watching and screaming,” Claus added. “He played through it.”
For singles, Alex Matiss, Matt Dahl and Alexis Haselwanter also posted wins against Rochester. For doubles teams Brendan Greenlee and Mitch Rogowski won their sets to aid in the win.
“Rochester every year is a brawl for us,” Claus added. “They tend to have very good doubles. The past few years we have been strong at the top and they have been deeper. The question is that middle ground.
The Wolves also beat Lake Orion, Sept. 10, 7-2.
“It was two huge wins for us,” Claus said. “They are both in our league and in our region. We circle those dates every year on the calendar. Against Lake Orion we played better from top to bottom. We were in more control of that match.”
For singles, Matisse, Dahl, Stuart and Haselwanter won their sets while double teams Joey Whall and Johnny Whall; Dan Agnew and Eric Matynowski; and Greenlee and Rogowski won their sets.
“I suspect those two will be our toughest league matches,” Claus said. “It gives us confidence as a team and individuals. We are building a reputation and letting people know we are for real and a force to be reckoned with.
The boys improved to 5-1-1, 2-0 OAA White. They boys host Stoney Creek on Thursday and Rochester Adams on Monday, both beginning at 4 p.m.
