Six minutes is all the Wolves needed to build a lead in their home opener against Rochester Adams on Sept. 3.
Senior Brad Schultz led the ball towards the Highlanders’ net then passed it to junior Joey DeFinis, who put it into the left corner of the net with less than six minutes into the game.
“They worked really hard,” said Clarkston Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Curtis Payment about the 2-0 win. “Again we did not give up a lot of chances.”
Both teams battled following the first goal but the Wolves held control. Adams snuck in with six minutes left in the first half and made a shot on the net but junior goalie Grant Gotaas blocked it.
The Highlanders had one more chance a few minutes later on a corner kick but Clarkston’s defense was waiting. They blocked it and knocked it away from the goal’s range.
“They had a couple of close calls,” Payment added.
DeFinis scored again with 16 minutes left in the game with an assist from senior Max Monsour
“We had better offensive movements and we buried our chances,” said Payment. “We had six good chances and we buried two of them. I was happy with the game.”
The Wolves followed it with a tight rivalry game against Lake Orion last Thursday, which both teams ended tied at zero.
“We dominated but could not score,” said Payment. “Their goalie was pretty good. We missed the goal. We need to work on finishing because we had chances. It was just one of those nights – it wasn’t meant to be.”
The boys took 11 shots on the net and junior goalie Cary Wilson blocked the Dragons from scoring on the few shots they made.
“He did a really good,” Payment added. “They had a limited amount of shots but they had a bunch of crosses he did good one.”
The boys host their next two games with Goodrich is Friday and Troy Athens next Tuesday.
“We just keep doing what we have been doing,” said senior Jack O’Rilley. “Playing hard and playing our game.”
