On Aug. 24-25, Good Times returns to Goodrich for another annual weekend of fun for the whole family.
Hundreds are expected to converge downtown on Saturday and Sunday to watch the parade, jam to a band or two and visit with some of the townsfolk during the late summer event. The array of entertainment also includes an all-day craft show, marketplace vendors and a walking tour of the cemetery.
While many of the popular events including pancake breakfast, duck races, pie eating contests and blues music in the streets have kept visitors coming back each year, Bryan Haley, Good Times committee member, said some new attractions have been added.
‘There are new rides with Schmidt Amusements in the commons area and a classic car show on Erie Street,? he said. ‘There’s also a movie in the park, ‘The Lorax,? so bring your lawn chairs and blankets.?
The family friendly Dr. Seuss fable concerns the danger corporate greed poses to nature, using the literary element to give life to industry as the Once-ler and the environment as The Lorax.
‘We are also hosting a community-wide church service in the Commons area,? said Haley. ‘The Point Church will be leading the services. Then stop by for some Sunday lunch with Good Eats in Goodrich, featuring lunch items from Craberries Cafe, Redwood Lodge, Atlas Valley Country Club and Porter’s Orchard to name a few. The lunch is a great chance to enjoy some of the local eateries with your friends and neighbors in Goodrich.?
‘It’s also important to get to know the local businesses in town over dinner and also hear some of the Big Band sounds,? he said.
During dinner Steve Figgins and the Rock of Ages Big Band will provide some tunes.
‘After more than six years of performing together we have a pretty large song selection from the ?40s, ?50s, and ?60s,? he said. ‘Recently the group started adding newer big band songs like those by Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra to their selection of music. The group is made up of all volunteer musicians and provides plenty of fun for the whole family.?
Rick Horton, local resident and Goodrich Village Council President, plays the trumpet in the Rock of Ages Big Band.
‘Our whole band is from the area, we play a lot in the area,? he said. ‘It’s great to play in my hometown. Always a pretty good crowd in Goodrich and it’s nice to see my neighbors out there when I’m playing.?
