Lady Cagers hit the court last Friday in their season opener against Davison for their first win, 49-36.
“Our girls played really well,” Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach Tim Wasilk said. “I was really happy with how our girls responded. They played with great chemistry. They moved the ball well. We knocked down some open jump shots. It was nice to see.”
The Lady Wolves opened with a point from sophomore Erika Davenport from the free throw line.
Davison shot a field goal to get control of the scoreboard. Clarkston bounced back with a basket from junior Kacy Robinson with an assist from senior Delaney Kenny.
Robinson brought the girls into the lead with a point made off of one of her two attempts on the free throw line, 4-3.
The Lady Wolves kept the momentum going by adding eight more consecutive points to the board with baskets from Davenport, senior Patrice Matthews and two baskets points from Kenny.
Davison Mariah Ferris stopped the momentum Clarkston created with a field goal.
The Lady Wolves came back with two points from junior Haley Daugherty from a pass from junior Carly Giroux before the first quarter ended, 14-8.
Clarkston continued the momentum into the rest of the game as they outscored and continued to lead until the end.
Wasilk contributed the momentum to building off of defense.
“We try to preach our defense creates our offense,” he said. “We know we are going to miss some shots and have some turnovers but go after them defensively and build our momentum from there. Push the ball on the fast break and go from there for baskets.?
Erika Davenport led the team with 17 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Kacy Robinson had 10 points.
“Erika did a really good job inside,” said Wasilk. “She rebounded well. She was very active on both sides of the floor. I was happy to see all of our kids and new players who haven’t been in this kind of environment before they did a nice job and responded well.”
The Lady Wolves played rivals Lake Orion (0-2) on Tuesday.
“Anything can happen,” Wasilk said heading into the game. “I hope we can lead defensivel and build on our communication. It will be a big step in moving in the right direction.”
The girls are home on Friday when they play Dakota and on Tuesday against Avondale at Clarkston High School.
Both games begin with JV at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
