Coy Stewart, a longtime Brandon School District teacher, has been named the interim principal of Belle Ann Elementary for the 2012-2013 school year.
Superintendent Lorrie McMahon announced her decision on Tuesday, noting in a memo to school board members that Stewart has most recently been a reading recovery teacher at Harvey Swanson Elementary and served as a literacy coach in the district.
‘In the past few years Coy has been preparing herself for a principalship,? McMahon said. ‘To do this, she has taken on many district leadership roles and I am pleased that she has accepted the opportunity to further serve our students and families.?
Stewart replaces Cathy Kochanski, who resigned to take a principal position in Rochester Hills. The Belle Ann position is interim as the district considers the restructuring of buildings. Officials are also seeking an interim principal for Brandon Fletcher Intermediate School after Jeff Beane resigned to take a position as a teacher in Brighton.
Besides new principals, the board will also soon have a new member of its own. During their Monday meeting, the board interviewed two candidates seeking appointment to complete the term of Debbie Schummer, who has moved from the dis-trict and whose term ends in December. Lisa Kavalhuna, an attorney, and Diane Salter, a Troy police sergeant, both have children in the district. Roy Johnson, who retired from the district after 29 years as a music teacher, is also seeking appointment, but was out of town.
The school board will appoint one of the three during their next regular meeting, set for 6:30 p.m., Aug. 20, at the central district office, 1025 S. Ortonville Road.
