Atlas Twp.-Katlyn Alexandra Baker was a typical 12 year old who liked playing softball, being with her friends and working hard at her studies.
Katlyn’s life tragically ended on May 30 when she was involved in a go-cart accident at her home. She was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center, where she died as a result of head injuries.
Katlyn attended Belle Ann Elementary School in Brandon Township from kindergarten to third grade, then moved to Goodrich continuing her education.
On Monday as classmates and teachers arrived at both of Katlyn’s schools where social workers, counselors and a crisis team gathered to assist.
‘It’s sad hearing these students talk about how much they miss her. She was here Friday and gone Monday. You just don’t think of children leaving like that,? said Mark Rodak, Belle Ann principal.
‘She had the nicest eyes and the best smile. She was just a very nice student and it’s very sad she won’t be able to complete any of the things that she may have wanted to.?
Rodak said Katlyn’s interest in sports led her to become part of the Brandon Northstars Softball Team.
‘The parents on that team who knew her have had a very hard time dealing with her loss.?
Several teachers from both Belle Ann Elementary and Goodrich Middle School attended funeral services on June 3 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Goodrich.
‘She was such a sweetheart. I’ve known the family for a long time, so I’m just trying to be supportive for them. All of her peers and the staff here really took a liking to her, she was just a very well rounded student and little girl,? said Dr. Jerry Lawrason, Goodrich Middle School principal
Rodak said children often just do not understand what death means, and it’s been helpful to have the counselors available for them.
