Ski team bests Flushing

Oxford/Holly’s boys and girls varsity ski team opened up the season on a high note with a dominating effort against Flushing Jan. 18-19.
The boys team defeated Flushing 20-71, while the girls won 26-49.
‘I was very impressed with our skiing and was very excited to start the season with a win,? varsity ski coach Phil Nimmo said. ‘There were some tough courses that day, but they were still able to come out on top.?
Oxford/Holly boys took the top four spots in the Slalom on Jan. 19, with sophomore Greg Schultz leading the way with a combined run of 1:03.06. Freshmen Lars Joergens-Kokate finished second with a 1:03.98. Sophomore Spencer Christen was nearly five seconds back in third (1:08.55), and Holly senior Spencer McKay was fourth.
It was more of the same when the boys took to the Giant Slalom course on Jan. 19.
Joergens-Kokate had the fastest combined time, 45.40, followed by Schultz in second (45.67) and senior Alex Schultz in third (45.91).
Holly senior Dalton Sink was fourth with a 46.11.
On the girls side, Holly senior Rachel Harrington won both the Slalom (1:10.42) and Giant Slalom (47.19), and fellow Holly senior Jessie Felix was second in the Slalom (1:14.04) and third in the Giant Slalom (50.42).
Junior Alyssa Wysocki was the top finisher for Oxford in the Slalom, finishing fifth (1:21.52) and junior Abby Wrobel was sixth (1:31.11).
In the Giant Slalom, sophomore Iida Mantyla finished second (49.62) and Wrobel was sixth (52.48).
Despite the victories, Nimmo said it was a rough day on the slopes, especially for the boys.
‘Slalom was a rough day for us. We had four guys that had to stop and hike back up the hill because they missed a gate,? Nimmo said.
‘If you miss a gate, you have to go back up the hill and pass it legally, or else you get disqualified,? he explained.
Up next for Oxford/Holly is a date against Flint Powers on Jan. 25-26.
Nimmo said Powers was a strong team on both the guys and girls side. ‘It should be a pretty exciting match to watch,? he said.
