Kickers were quick on their feet after Oxford put their first point on the board during last Thursday’s game.
The Wolves still had a lead over their visitors, 3-1, but from past experience they knew they had to respond.
“We started to get slow,” said Jarrett Kersten. “They got their goal. It really got our motivation back again.”
Kersten led the pack and sent the ball over the Wildcats defense wall and into the goal at with 27 minutes remaining in the game, five after Oxford successful goal.
Less than three minutes later Blake Anderson and Ryne Jones added two more goals to the board.
The boys finished the game with a win, 6-2.
“We came out really well the first 15 minutes,” said Coach Chuck Lawhoern. “We created a lot of opportunities we didn’t finish. All and all I thought we played pretty good.”
Clarkston gained control of the field at the beginning of the game. Though the Wildcats had won the coin toss for ball possession to begin the game the Wolves swept in and took over.
They kept it in Oxford’s territory taking shots on goal until they put themselves on the board 12 minutes into the game when Erik McEntee took a corner kick.
The ball sailed out into the group in front of the net. Kersten jumped up and connected his head to the ball, sending it into the net.
The next goal was from Jones, ending the first half, 2-0.
They kept the momentum going three minutes into the second half when McEntee scored the Wolves’ third goal.
“I talked to them at half time,” said Lawhorn. “We had a let down in the last 15-20 minutes in the first half. I told them they have to ‘play hard the whole time and let’s finish something right here in the first ten minutes. ‘”
Clarkston made ten shots on goal.
The boys beat Troy-Athens earlier in the week, 2-1. Conor Bright and Alex Wilson scored during the Sept. 28 game.
“I believe it got them into the mindset for Thursday,” said Lawhorn. “We had six shots and finished two of them which was pretty good. We played really hard for the entire game. It’s a tough place to go down there and play. They came out of there with a win.”
The boys host Holly on Wednesday night and head to Rochester on Thursday.
“We need to come out with the same mentality – come out, work hard and play well,” said Kersten. “We are getting into a groove this week with two wins. I am glad to see it.”
The boys tied against Rochester earlier in the season.
“I expect us to play harder in this game,” said Lawhorn. “Hopefully the momentum from Thursday will carry us this week and we will be ready to this week and beyond into districts.\
The home game against Holly on Wednesday and Royal Oak on Tuesday begins at 5:30 p.m. with the JV team, varsity follows.
JV plays Rochester at 6 p.m., varsity follows.
