I looked over as my friend was driving her jeep on Friday night and sighed.
Not trying to scare her, since the vehicle was in drive, I told her to put the phone away.
She was looking at a text message.
She put her phone away and said the Texting Ban doesn’t begin until July 1.
I agreed but said we, meaning her, could practice early.
As for me, I have practiced in the last month. I am not a bad text-at-the-wheel. Checking the phone, yes. Checking email, yes. Texting, no.
Honestly, I am not a big fan of texting. I know OMG! The abbreviations could be why – I like to type out words as well as be very detailed.
So why others will go through the painful process of their thumbs on the wheel then on the keypad, I will just put my phone in my purse.
They took away texting because it is a distraction – taking eyes and focus off the road and hands off the wheel and it happens all at the same time.
Yes, we can fight it by pointing out how many other things happen when a person is behind the wheel to distract them. But the deed is done.
Either way – just keep focus on the road.
If you want to text while driving, thinking you won’t be caught remember the price you pay. For the first offense, $100 and $200 for the following.
While in Detroit – only hands free use of the cell phone is allowed. Just a warning.
Since 24 states, including Michigan, have banned texting maybe some creative ideas could come out of this.
When driving you could press your OnStar button and ask the operator make you a reservation at a restaurant and get directions. Since you are already talking to the operator, have him or her text everyone in your party to let them know you are running late.
Or maybe someone can give the GPS another function. This one I haven’t thought out completely so I will let someone else think of the million dollar idea and patent it.
As for any other ideas I don’t have anymore right now. Try me in a few days. Once a thought is planted, it grows.
