Sophomore Megan Hastings held her position and let go of the ball, putting it into the basket for three points in the final quarter.
The field goal set the momentum as Girls Varsity Basketball took on Waterford Mott in non-league play.
They weren’t able to do it as the Lady Corsairs blocked them out, ending the game with a loss, 32-19.
The girls kept the season opener in mind as they headed into last Friday’s game against Waterford Kettering.
‘We made some good strides from our first game to our second game,? said Tim Wasilk, head coach. ‘Our youth definitely came out in our first game. We made some mistakes and turned the ball over too many times. We definitely improved going into the second game.?
The girls also lost against Kettering, 54-34, but their scoring improved.
‘We made strides,? said Wasilk. ‘We did a better job with press and a better job on offense. We toughened up on both sides of the floor.?
Wasilk added the girls came together more as a team during the second game and they will build on it to continue to get better.
Leading the girls on the board was Anna Manilla with nine points and Delaney Kenny with eight. Kenny, Lindsey Reppuhn and Christina Jokisch scored 3-pointers during the game.
‘Overall, the coaching staff and players were more pleased about the performance,? said Wasilk.
Reppuhn and Shauna Siwicki led during the Mott game, both with six points, and Hastings added five to the scoreboard. The girls head into their first league games this and next week, beginning with Stoney Creek on Thursday.
‘Stoney Creek is always a good team,? said Wasilk. ‘They are definitely well-coached and they play hard. We scrimmaged against them earlier this year so we are familiar with their playing style.?
The girls continue on Tuesday when they host West Bloomfield.
‘We just hope to get better each week and come out on top,? said Wasilk.
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
