The rain slowly fell from the clouds onto the home field as the girls varsity softball team wrapped their final game for the season.
The Lady Wildcats lost to Lake Orion during the district playoffs, 3-0.
The Dragons had one run in when they loaded the bases during the fourth inning, but Corinne Luxton pitched a strikeout Danielle Guldi and sent all the Dragons back into the dugout.
The Cats worked to put one on the scoreboard but Lake Orion was eager to keep them off of the board.
‘We just didn’t produce offensively and that is a shame because the girls were really prepared and fired up for this game,? said Coach Kristi McDevitt. ‘It was a toss up because we are both really good ball teams. Lake Orion had the better day and capitalized off of a couple of our errors.?
Juniors Corinne Luxton and Kelly Cartner were 2- for- 3 at the plate
The season ended sooner for the girls then they had hoped, but they still had a lot to celebrate.
‘This year’s squad finished with one of the best records in the recent memory,? said McDevitt.
They finished overall 25-10 and in third place in the Flint Metro League with a 12-6 record.
‘We had a fantastic year,? said McDevitt. ‘Oxford also had five players recognized in the Flint Metro League.?
Juniors Corinne Luxton, Kelly Cartner, and Chelsea Kessler were all named 1st Team, while junior Allie Laidlaw and freshman Cassie Edgemon were given Honorable Mention.
‘The Wildcats were also represented well in their district and six players named to the All-District teams in their respective positions,? added McDevitt.
Making the 1st All-District team are:
Corrine Luxton, pitcher, Chelsea Kessler, second base, Allie Laidlaw, short stop, and Cassie Edgemon, third base.
Catcher Kelly Cartner and Centerfielder Alyssa Hurtado were named to the 2nd Team All- District team.
