Lady Cagers may have lost their home opener against Davison, 50-41, but they showed they are becoming stronger as a team.
‘I thought we did some good things tonight, as far coming together a little bit as a team,? said Varsity Coach Tim Wasilk.
He noticed the girls grow defensively and with their communication on the court.
‘We are going to some of our lumps early,? said Wasilk. ‘We will continue to stay competitive and stay focused and do the things that we can control. It’s a matter of us gelling and coming together. I think we will be okay.?
The girls momentum picked up during the fourth quarter. The ball was knocked out of Kaleigh Kenny’s hands by Davison defenders. Teammate Mikaela Parrish caught the ball but Davison quickly knocked it out of her hands as well.
Erica Harris caught the ball and took her shot before the Cardinals could take the opportunity away from her.
Harris shot for another two points and closed the previous 13-point gap. Before the game was finished the Clarkston newcomer scored 11 points in the quarter.
‘Erica did a great job,? said Wasilk. ‘This was her first game today and we’re excited to have her. She brought a lot of energy to the floor and gave us a spark on both sides on the floor.?
Freshmen Anna Manilla and Megan Hastings saw more time during the game.
‘They have been doing a great job during practice. They are talented kids and work hard. They will only get better with experience,? said Wasilk.
Hastings put Clarkston on the board with a three point field goal.
A basket from Kenny and another from Hastings tied the score at seven points to end the first quarter.
The Cardinals fought back and quickly gained their lead with five points and ended the first half, 22-14.
The leading scorers for Clarkston were Harris, 14, Parrish and Hastings, 8, and Kenny with six points. Harris and Hastings had two 3-pointers for the night.
High scorers for Davison were Lauren Bellamy, 11, Chelsea Billbrough, 10, and Kaylee Rahmann, 8.
JV won their game against the Cardinals, 51-32. The girls played Lake Orion on Tuesday and will play at Southfield-Lathrup on Friday before their holiday break.
‘We just need to get better in our energy, in our intensity,? said Wasilk looking ahead. ‘We are just going to keep working and getting better.?
