The Goodrich Varsity Skeet team needs a shot in the arm.
During the past years the National Rife Association has helped sponsor the school team which includes about 40 student members. The NRA, grant is used by the team to purchase ear and eye protection, ammunition and vests along with a variety of equipment needed to compete in the sport.
‘We just did not want the sport to be cost prohibitive,? said Darrell King, team coach. ‘We are now starting the teams fourth year and due to a tough economy the grant money is just not made available anymore. The NRA has been great but right now we need some help.?
King, along with other parents are seeking donations to help keep the team going.
‘One of the advantages of skeet shooting is a level playing field. Maybe the youth is not the best runner or soccer player or excels in other school sports’skeet shooting gives kids a great alternative to traditional sports.?
King emphasizes that costs to give students a chance to shoot can be prohibitive.
‘The price of ammunition and other equipment is going up,? said King. ‘So any items or cash that people have that may help the team is needed and much appreciated.?
We can take a youth who never shot a gun and teach hand-eye coordination. It’s a safe fun sport that has thrived here in Goodrich.?
The varsity squad finished in second place in The Michigan Scholastic Clay Target Program 2008 State Championship at the Detroit Gun Club in Walled Lake. Coach Darrell King said Goodrich had 14 shooters in the competition.
