Junior quarterback Tyler Scarlett held onto the ball and ran up the middle of the field from the 13 yard line.
Five minutes remained in the game as Scarlett landed in the end zone as Romeo’s defense players grabbed him around the ankles.
The touchdown kept the Bulldogs from shutting out Clarkston in the first round of the MHSAA District playoffs last Saturday.
As the final seconds of the season counted down on the clock, Wolves? players on the sidelines patted each other on the shoulders. The boys ended the season at Romeo, 38-7.
‘It was very disappointing,? said Wolves Varsity Head Coach Kurt Richardson. ‘I expected the boys to do a lot better. I don’t want to take anything away from Romeo. They were good on offense and defense.?
‘I was nervous. They are a fast team,? said Romeo’s Co-Head Coach Jason Couch. ‘Clarkston is very well-coached. Those kids just fly to the ball and they are aggressive. We were able to catch them on a couple long gains and were able to jump up 31 nothing, which I think took everyone by surprise.?
The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown nine minutes into the game and finished the first quarter a few minutes later with one more. The momentum only continued from there and by the end of the first half, Romeo led, 31-0.
‘I just thought we could establish a little run and if they were packed in the box we could pick them in the air,? said Couch. ‘If we could get a running game going, everything would fall into place.?
Scoring for Romeo were Taylor Brynaert and Ben Brown with two touchdowns each, Jason Schirmer with one touchdown and a field goal and five PATs from Robert Flinn.
Romeo continues on in the playoffs and plays Lake Orion on Friday night, a team they lost to last year in the first round of playoffs, 24-21.
The Wolves finished the season, 6-4.
‘We are losing a lot of key seniors, but we have a lot coming back,? said Richardson.
The Wolves lose Luke Prudhomme, Kyle Rivenburgh, Alex Popp, Matt Calvano, Adam Koelb, John Shumacher, and Sloan Hadsall.
Richardson noted next season will depend on how much will work is done in the weight room.
‘Hopefully the juniors learned something, from talking to them ? it sounds like they did,? said Richardson. ‘You learn something from each game, sometimes more from the losses than the wins.?
