District targets teenage drinking at town hall

Brandon Twp.- Low turnout at a town hall meeting isn’t deterring local officials from spreading the word on the dangers of teenage alcohol consumption.
‘We had a small turnout, but we have to start somewhere,? said Brandon High School Principal Michael Ferguson of the meeting held May 22 at BHS. ‘One of the things statistics show is that if you develop a community group, just the awareness alone will decrease teenage drinking.?
The town hall meeting was held to increase the understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences and to address the problem.
Ferguson said security is very tight at the high school, but he is concerned about students and their actions during the summer, especially during graduation parties.
‘We want students and parents of students to make sound decisions,? he said.
Toward that end, graduates and their parents are being sent a letter including information from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism on the affect of alcohol on teens.
Ferguson is also planning another town hall meeting in the fall and hopes to gain some momentum then.
