Racing to a big finish

Regionals are quickly approaching and Clarkston’s track teams are ready to compete.
During the OAA league meet last weekend, the girls took second place and the boys took seventh.
‘This season has been about working with young guys,? said boys varsity coach John Bennink. ‘They will come out more in seasons to come.?
During the OAA league meet on Saturday, the boys team scored 47 points. They lost to sixth place to Southfield by one point.
The boys took first place in two events, the long jump and 400 meter relay.
Erik Thompson made his last jump count and landed at 21 feet and half an inch.
Thompson, John Verros, Adam Sharp and Duane George came ran 43.2 in the 400 relay.
‘The boys did really well,? said Bennink.
Carlo Mollicone placed fourth in discus throw and threw to 123 feet.
‘It was a personal best for him,? said Bennink.
Also to place were Duane George, fourth in 100 meter (11.2); Jeff Kuhl, fifth in 1600 meter (4:30.3); and Kyle Riverburgh, third in low hurdles (41.8) and fourth in high hurdles (16.4).
The girls took second place behind West Bloomfield with a score of 75.5.
Taking first place in their events were: Stephanie Thorstad in high jump with five feet and five inches; Kristen Smith in 3200 meter run (11:02.2); Autumn Touchstone in low hurdles (45.3); 1600 meter relay team, Caitlyn Post, Andrea Butler, Jena Manilla, and Touchstone (4:08.2).
Also to place were Touchstone, second in high jump (15.2); Devon Rehm, fourth in shot put (31?10?); Manilla, fifth (62.3) and Post, sixth (62.7) in 400 meter dash; and Tiffany Kincaid, sixth in 1600 meter run (5:27.2)
Last Tuesday both teams won their meets at Southfield. The boys won 75-53 and girls won 78-50.
Clarkston hosts the regional meet on Saturday. It begins at 9:30 a.m.
‘We’re see what happens,? said Bennink about how the boys will do to get a place for states.
‘If we compete well, the weather cooperates, and get everything together, we will be fine.?
