During their first spring season the boys golf team has endured rain, wind and daily change of temperatures. None of the conditions have held them back from leading the OAA Red division with a undefeated record, 6-0.
Monday they kept up their momentum in their second OAA Red league meet and took first place. Clarkston scored 310 and were closely followed by Waterford Kettering (311) and Rochester Adams (316).
Tommy Ronk led the team with a par of 75. Jordan Roth followed with 76, Brandon Stone with 78. Matt Fuller, Jarred Horner and Mike Graham each had a par of 81.
The boys faced rival Adams last Thursday. They beat Adams by 13 shots at their home course Westwynd Golf Club.
‘Our play is continuing to improve and our scores showed it as we posted a team best 152,? said Clarkston coach Mark Wiegand.
Leading the way for the Wolves were Horner with even par 36, Ronk and Stone each with 37, and Roth with 42.
The day before, they hosted undefeated Troy at The Fountains (formerly Liberty). The Wolves played as the rain fell down on them. They beat the Colts, 154-166.
Ronk led the team with an even par 36. Roth followed at 38, Horner at 39, and Stone at 41.
‘It was a great week and I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished so far this season,? said Wiegand.
During the busy week, the team noticed their strengths in playing in the spring season.
‘We’re learning that we can still play even in inclement weather as we showed in the Troy match,? said Wiegand.
‘We’re improving our scores with additional short game shots that are increasing our percentages of getting up and down. The players have been working on these shots in practice, and have now put them in under tournament and match conditions and they’ve seen success.?
Wiegand said he has seen other players step up and play very well when some of their top players didn’t have their best games.
‘This shows some depth to our team and that we don’t have to count on any one player to be able to compete. Tommy Ronk, the only junior on our team, is showing why he’s fast becoming one of the best players in the league.?
On May 5, the team competed against 21 teams to take first place at the Bay City Western Invitational.
The boys scored 314 at the Bay City Country Club.
Big Rapids came in second place followed by Rochester Adams and Flint Powers.
Ronk scored a par of 77. Fuller, Stone and Horner each had a par of 79. All of them finished in the top ten.
‘Unfortunately they don’t get much time to sit back and enjoy the success,? said Wiegand. ‘It’s going to be another exciting week.?
They are busy preparing for the Oakland County Tournament on Friday at Pontiac Country Club and a tournament in Lansing on Monday.
The boys will host Kettering next Tuesday in their last league match at The Fountains.
