A 28-year-old Ypsilanti man who drove his vehicle into his brother-in-law, a Brandon Township man, has been sentenced to 46 days in jail, with credit for 46 days served, was given three years probation and must pay fines and costs of $1,740.
James Tiung Huie was sentenced Oct. 18 in front of Sixth Judicial Circuit Court Judge Mark Goldsmith, after he pleaded guilty to felonious assault and felony habitual offender.
The charges stemmed from a Sept. 16 incident, when, according to police reports, Brandon deputies were dispatched to the 2800 block of Mulberry.
The 35-year-old victim said he, his two young sons, and Huie had just returned from a trip up north. One of the boys had cried for about 20 minutes on the way home and when they arrived at the home on Mulberry, Huie began arguing with his sister, the victim’s wife, about the child’s behavior. When she asked her brother to leave, he charged her, and her husband stepped between them, escorting Huie from the home. Huie began hitting and kicking him, including a kick to the victim’s face after he fell.
They moved to the street, where Huie got in his vehicle, started it up and intentionally swerved it at the victim, striking him, according to the victim and several witnesses. Huie then backed up and tried unsuccessfully to hit the victim a few more times. Huie left and returned a few minutes later, yelling he was going to kill his sister and brother-in-law and burn their house down. He then went into his mother and stepfather’s house in the same block. The victim sought treatment for neck and back pain.
