Blanche Sims Elementary students weren’t just running for the exercise when they held their Fun Run last month, although they got plenty of it.
According to Sims? Principal Eric Whitney, 377 students participated in the run and ran 4,583 laps, or 509 miles.
‘We ran 509 miles so we could earn money for our school,? he told the students in a school assembly held last Friday. ‘That’s a lot of running.?
The money raised will help fund ‘extra special things that we do at Blanche Sims to make you better learners,? Whitney added.
‘It didn’t matter if you raised $1 or a $100, we just wanted everyone to have a fun time,? he said.
And fun was had indeed, with this year’s run being the fifth time Sims has hosted a Fun Run, an activity the whole school, grades kindergarten through fifth, has fun getting involved in.
In fact, this year, three classes, second grade Mrs. Marshall’s class, third grade Mrs. Wayne’s class and fourth grade Ms. Best’s class, all had 100 percent participation from their classrooms.
Mrs. Marshall’s class was also honored for raising the third largest amount of money, with Mrs. Daw’s fifth grade class earning the second highest amount.
The big honor went to this year’s Fun Run Cup winners, Ms. Abraham’s third grade class, for raising the most money.
Whitney thanked all the students for participating and reminded them that they are all winners.
‘Everybody is a winner because you worked hard to raise money for your school,? he said, noting that the dollar amount the students raised is ‘amazing.?
It totaled out at $13,406.15, but there is a chance some additional envelopes will be handed in this week, causing more money to be added to the total.
To show appreciation for the students? hard work, individuals were also selected by random to win special prizes for their participation.
The Fun Run committee thanked a handful of sponsors that through donations helped make the run possible and special for Sims students.
These sponsors included Hollywood Market, McDonald’s, Kmart and Kroger of Lake Orion, as well as Harvest Time and National Printing in Oxford and Android Industries, Meijer, Sam’s Club, Costco and Target of Auburn Hills.
Pine Tree Elementary, who also held their Fun Run on the same day as Blanche Sims, has raised around $13,000 to go towards their school as well.
