Individuals driving along Heights Road, just south of Lakeview, will find some temporary relief, in the form of coal patch, while the Village Council decides on its next step to fix the road.
The road, which was damaged, and then patched, after a water main break last winter, has continued to worsen, prompting the Village Council to collect bids for the road repair.
According to Village Manager JoAnn Van Tassel, Hubble, Roth & Clark (HRC), village engineers, estimated that it would cost approximately $11,500 to restore that section of Heights Road to Road Commission standards.
After bids were received from four companies, HRC recommended awarding contract to ASIX Asphalt Paving in the amount of $17,275, some $5,775 more than originally estimated.
According to HRC Vice President Tom Biehl, the higher cost is due to it now being later in the construction season, as well as elevated gas prices and the cost of a new stone required by Road Commission standards.
Some members of the council, while noting that importance of getting the road repaired, did not feel comfortable with the new price, prompting direction for more bids to be received for the project.
In the meantime, council directed for the DPW to put some coal patch on the road to lessen the dip and, as Village Council member Michael Toth said, ‘make it passable for a couple of weeks.?
