It’s an issue that many women don’t feel comfortable talking about, but according to physical therapist Heather Costas, it’s a common problem that many females face.
Bladder incontinence affects as many as 19 million individuals in the United States, and it’s not just an age-based issue as many may believe.
In fact, about 30 percent of women between 21 to 45 years old who perform regular aerobic exercise experience periodic leaking, but through a new women’s health program developed through Stryker Physiotherapy Associates, Costas said that it is a problem that can be drastically improved through physical therapy.
‘This is a non-invasive approach,? said Costas. ‘It’s a different alternative to medication and surgery.?
The women’s health program consists of therapy once a week for four weeks. Through therapy, a participant will be shown exercises that strengthen and tone muscles of the pelvic floor. Once they are done with their scheduled visits, Costas said that the exercises are easy enough for them to continue at home.
She added that a difference can be seen in just over three weeks, and a participant can continue their progress as they continue to do the exercises.
Costas also looks at nutrition and lifestyle, and will work to make improvements in those areas, along with teaching relaxation techniques.
Relaxation helps, she said, because it affects your autonomic nervous system, which in turn affects bladder function.
Costas said that for those that may be interested in trying this kind of physical therapy, they must first see their general physician to get a prescription for the physical therapy. Then, she will evaluate an individual and get them started on a plan that involves exercises and important nutritional information.
Also, she added, insurances have been shown to cover these expenses.
