The Orion Community Coalition held its first organizational meeting last week.
According to substance abuse prevention advisor Michele Novak, about 25 people attended the meeting and the group has gotten strong commitment from some of the individuals. Within the group, Novak said, there is also a committed group of active students that will be participating in the coalition.
The coalition developed their mission statement and will be holding an informational meeting every Monday as they work out the necessary organizational aspects of the organization. The meetings occur at 7 p.m. at the Lake Orion High School Media Center.
According to Novak, the group has gotten great response from the business community, but she is hoping more support will continue to come the coalition’s way.
‘We’re moving in the right direction,? Novak said, noting that the Troy Community Coalition, which has developed a mentor program to help get the Orion Coalition on its feet, was impressed with the steps the Orion group has already taken.
‘We would like more support and we would like more involvement,? Novak added, saying that while the group has received great support from the school board, they would like to have more government officials active within the organization and its planning stages.
