Dog Days of August coming next week

Downtown Lake Orion will be going to the dogs starting Aug. 24.
That’s when the Dog Days of August downtown sidewalk sales (with participating village merchants) and village-wide garage sales kick-off, running through Aug. 25.
On Aug. 25, T&C Federal Credit Union is sponsoring Music and a Movie in the parking lot of Children’s Park, beginning at 7 p.m.
The movie Madagascar will be shown at dusk, and concessions will be available. Please bring your own chair.
Finally, on Aug. 26, doggie-themed events kick-off in the area around Children’s Park, including Doggie Mayor elections, and doggie contests.
The doggie-themed events will begin at 10 a.m., with the Blessings of the Dog (non-denominational), in the parking lot of Children’s Park.
Downtown Lake Orion is still taking applications for Doggie Mayor. To learn how to nominate your four-legged friend, visit www.downtownlakeorion.org to download an application.
On Aug. 26, owners will be allowed to ‘campaign? for their candidate, and are invited to bring a sign with an 8×11 picture of their dog.
People can vote for Doggie Mayor by dropping change in the candidates? canisters. Whoever has the most change will be named the new mayor.
Lake Orion artist Kim Santini will be doing a pet portrait for the newly-elected Doggie Mayor.
A doggie parade will also be held on Aug. 26, and owners are invited to dress up their dogs.
A variety of products for both doggies and their owners will be available for purchase, and concessions will also be available. Accommodations for dogs will be readily available.
Anyone who would like to participate in the village-wide garage sales can contact the DDA office to have their sale placed on a map that will be available at the DDA booth.
Listings are free, and the DDA also has a limited number of garage sale signs available for purchase.
To register your garage sale, contact the DDA at 693-9742, or email events@downtownlakeorion.org.
The DDA said restroom facilities will be available, courtesy of Turner Sanitation.
Doggie-events are sponsored by Steven Auger & Associates, Pet Supplies Plus, Lake Orion Lumber, and Jacobsen’s Flowers and Garden Town.
