Brandon’s hockey team fell victim to a mid-game onslaught by Berkley in a Feb. 4 nonleague contest.
The Bears scored two goals in the second period and one more in the third period to pull away from the Blackhawks for a 6-2 win.
Brandon fell to 10-6 overall with the loss. The Blackhawks remain undefeated in the Flint Metro League at 7-0.
Berkley scored two goals late in the first period, one with 2:17 left in the period and the second goal 17 seconds later, to take a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
The second period would feature a flurry of goals, with Brandon’s Matt Cinader scoring the opening tally of the period 43 seconds into the period. Cinader’s unassisted goal, his 17th of the year, came on a power play and cut the Bears? lead to 2-1.
Berkley then scored with 12:46 left in the second to increase their lead to 3-1. The Blackhawks then scored another power play goal with 11:44 left in the second, as Kyle Doan scored his sixth goal of the year on an assist from Tony Kraydich to trim the Bears? lead back to one, 3-2.
From that point, it was all Berkley as far as goal scoring was concerned. The Bears answered Brandon’s goal 14 seconds later with one of their own to increase their lead to 4-2, and then added another goal with 6:39 left in the second to take a 5-2 lead as the period came to a close.
In a wild and woolly game, the Blackhawks had enough offense to hold off visiting Kearsley 5-4 on Feb. 1.
Brandon Newman fed Cinader for the first goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining in the first period, but Kearsley’s Matt Ploof answered with 8:33 left in the period to tie the contest at one.
Kearsley’s Brent Segren gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead just 22 seconds into the second period, but Cinader scored his first goal of the game with 8:04 left in the second on an assist from Kraydich, knotting the game at two.
The third period was when the pucks started flying in the net like gangbusters. Doan put the Blackhawks up 3-2 just 34 seconds into the third period, but Matt Murdock answered for the Hornets with 11:38 left in the third to tie the contest at three.
Newman then scored two goals within the span of 11 seconds, the first coming with 8:29 left in the third, to put the Blackhawks up 5-3. Brandon then survived a late goal by Segren, his second of the game, to earn the victory.
Glen Kendrick had a busy night in net for the Blackhawks, stopping 31-of-35 Kearsley shots (88.6 percent).
