Even after clinching the Genesee Area Conference Red Division title, the Goodrich varsity girls basketball team showed no signs of a letdown against Montrose Nov. 1.
The visiting Martians soundly defeated the Rams 53-30 in a GAC Red matchup, improving to 14-3 overall and 13-2 in the league. Montrose fell to 5-13 overall and 4-11 in the league.
The Rams hung tough with the Martians for a quarter, as Goodrich held a four-point lead, 11-7, after the first period. Autumn Haggadone scored six points in the first to key the Goodrich lead.
The Martians stepped things up in the second quarter to take a 27-16 lead at halftime, and never looked back.
Senior Tara Garman led all scorers with 13 points, and added five rebounds and four steals. Kortni Elsworth chipped in with 12 points and six steals. As a team, the Martians had 26 steals in the contest.
Haggadone, in addition to scoring nine points in the game, was the Martians? leading rebounder, with seven of her nine boards coming on the offensive end. Jillian Zirnhelt had four assists and four steals, while Amy Ramiller contributed four steals.
Ashley Barron scored nine points in a losing cause for the Rams.
The Martians officially wrapped up the GAC Red title with a 63-12 win against visiting LakeVille in an Oct. 26 game.
Led by Elsworth’s eight points in the first quarter, the Martians jumped out to a 17-2 lead after the first quarter to set the tone for the game. Elsworth led all scorers with 20 points, including the only successful three-pointer of the game.
Brandi Barker added seven points for the Martians, while Tara Garman and Paige Plant added six points each. Garman also led Goodrich in rebounds (seven) and blocked shots (three). Amy Ramiller led the Martians in assists (four).
Hannah Voss led the Falcons with four points.
