Adam Hyde hopes to leave his mark at what has become a top-notch college track program.
The Brandon High School senior signed a letter of intent April 28 to attend Grand Valley State University in Allendale, on the west side of Michigan. He will run sprints and hurdles for the Lakers? men’s track team beginning in the 2005-06 school year.
However, it was more than athletics that attracted Hyde to GVSU, as he plans to double major in vocal and instrumental music.
Hyde’s father, Greg, a teacher and coach at BHS, said Adam had scholarship offers from several other schools, including the University of Detroit Mercy and Lake Superior State University, but the quality of GVSU’s music program gave them the edge.
‘He wants to go into the music program and become a music teacher,? he said.
Adam Hyde is the only male student at Brandon to make the state honors choir, and he is also the drum major for the Brandon marching band.
Hyde said during his visit with the GVSU coaching staff, they assured him they would do everything possible to make sure his all-around experience there is a successful one.
‘I’m pretty excited about it,? he said. ‘All the coaches have been nothing but supportive.?
One of Hyde’s teammates with the Blackhawks, senior Brandon Olejnik, said Hyde has been a top-notch friend and teammate.
‘He got me into track in the beginning,? he said, ‘I’m happy for him.?
The Lakers have won six straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, the most recent coming Feb. 26 as they easily outdistanced second-place Ashland, 196-113.5.
