Goodrich – This Tuesday Goodrich voters will head to the polls.
Residents will decide whether to keep the current village council, or, at the prompting of Vacate the Village group members’oust them for ‘failure to schedule an election for the disincorporation of the village charter of the Village of Goodrich when requested to do so.?
The recall was initiated in September by Vacate members after dissolution petition signatures didn’t prompt an immediate vote.
The council’s decision to change the charter first was reached at the advice of village attorney Tom McKenney.
According to McKenney’s written opinion the home-rule village’which operates under its own charter’should not set up a vote for village residents only. The attorney instead advised changing the charter to provide for non-village residents living in Atlas Township to vote as well.
Goodrich residents will vote whether to recall village council president Keith Walworth, president pro tem Adam Kline, and councilpersons Angela Adamec, Mike Glynn, and Jayme Simmonds.
Council members, all residents of the Village of Goodrich, are compensated a maximum of $800 per year.
If council members are recalled, a May 5 election will be held to fill vacancies.
If three or more councilpersons remain, the council may appoint its own interim council members; otherwise the Genesee County elections office will appoint interim council members from village residents ‘not active on either side of the recall.?
