Goodrich – Police and felon alike suffered Taser and bite wounds Sunday when the fugitive was apprehended in a Goodrich parking lot.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT) was tracking the suspect when a Brandon Township deputy became involved, said Lt. Dale LaBair, commander of the Independence Township sheriff’s substation.
According to media reports confirmed by LaBair, the 40-year-old Pontiac man, Michael Raymond Maxwell was charged with a Jan. 31 armed robbery and assault of a police officer in Auburn Hills.
The FAT team originally anticipated the suspect would be found near M-15 and Dixie Highway in Oakland County.
‘The operation actually was a FAT thing, but because it moved very quickly they got ahold of me looking for help,? said LaBair, who directed Brandon Township’s involvement when the suspect headed north.
Police blocked Maxwell’s vehicle in the parking lot of the Goodrich Plaza about 11:30 a.m. Feb. 5, said Detective Sgt. Joe Parks, commander of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department Atlas Township Precinct.
Police, who expected Maxwell to be dangerous, broke out the car’s window, K-9 dog Ronnie jumped into the vehicle, and another officer opened the passenger door.
Trying to subdue the man, an Oakland County deputy and detective were also affected by a Taser used on the subject, Parks said.
Maxwell was arrested and taken to a local hospital for treatment of Taser and dog bite wounds before being lodged in the Oakland County Jail.
Along with Oakland County warrants, a Genesee County warrant is being issued for resisting and obstructing, said Parks.
An Oakland County police officer was treated at North Oakland Medical Center for bite wounds resulting from the incident.
