They battled the heat, the rain and anything else nature threw at them during the week to come out on top. They are the members of the Independence Oaks Wild Adventures Extreme Camp.
The camp, which is open to kids 11-15-years old, is a spin off of the Wild Adventure Camp designed for older kids.
Campers get a chance to learn different things about the outdoors and camp out on the final night of the camp. Activities at the extreme camp include shelter building and swamping, which is where campers are in a canoe that is tipped over and they must empty the canoe and get back in it.
‘The extreme week is a little different than the normal adventure camps,? camp counselor Jermiah Stieve said. ‘We can push a little more because the kids are older.?
Camper Jessica Bacher said she enjoyed the scavenger hunt the most.
‘They set up a whole thing for us and whoever was the fastest to find everything won,? Bacher said.
Camper Michael Neal said he enjoyed the entire camp.
‘It was all around fun,? Neal said. ‘The shelter building was fun and the food was good.?
The heat caused the counselors to cancel some of the planned events and they also ran into a little trouble with run during the camp out.
Water flooded many of the tents and campers were forced to spend some of the night in the bathrooms before the storm died down.
The situation made for a late night, but the campers didn’t mind.
‘Our tents were all wet and so were our sleeping bags, but it was fun,? camper Andrea Dumais said.
There will be two more Adventure Camps this summer starting August 7 and August 14. For more information call 248-625-8223.
