Garman, Bertrand ignite Martian softball team in district opener

Led by Tara Garman and Alyssa Bertrand, the Goodrich softball team started district competition on a bright note.
Garman and Bertrand each went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Martians to a 16-0 win against Atherton in their June 1 district opener.
Goodrich (26-9) advanced to take on Byron in district action Saturday, June 5 at Goodrich. The district championship game took place later that day; results were not available as of press time.
Jessica Morgan picked up the win for Goodrich, no-hitting Atherton while striking out six. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-4.
The Martians were maybe a bit too hospitable as they hosted the Goodrich Softball Tournament Sunday, May 30.
Goodrich dropped all three games on the day, losing to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 7-1, Hartland 4-3, and Richmond 2-1.
Kelsey Krych and Morgan provided a couple of bright spots for Goodrich, with Krych tallying five hits in the three games and Morgan four.
The Martians had a much better time of things against visiting Montrose in a May 27 Genesee Area Conference Red Division doubleheader, defeating the Rams 11-1 in the opener and 9-2 in the nightcap. Goodrich is now 19-3 in GAC Red play.
Morgan hurled a no-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead the Martians to the win, and also went 3-for-3 with three RBI. She came back to fire a two-hitter as the Martians captured the second game.
Krych went 4-for-5 in the nightcap, while Garman had two hits (including a home run) and four RBI for the Martians.
