The Oxford seventh grade boys? basketball team pulled off an undefeated season last week after beating Lapeer Zemmer 34-22 on Wednesday and Brandon 57-38 on Thursday.
‘The undefeated season was especially gratifying for me because I realized we came together as a team when all 17 players made key contributions in the remaining games to keep the streak alive,? said Coach Tom Wagner.
‘The season was capped off in the final seconds of the last game when the entire team left their seats in overwhelming support of one of their teammates who scored for the first time,? he added.
Prior to their final two games, the Wildcats survived two ‘come from behind wins? over Lapeer East 49-47 and 39-38.
Averaging 40 points a game, Wagner said the boys have benefited from participation in clinics and camps run by Oxford High School varsity coach Steve Laidlaw, among others.
‘Everyone on the team has contributed to the overall success with balanced scoring and tough defense,? said Wagner.
Over the last three years, the seventh grade teams have a 30-4 record, an amazing feat for a middle school sport.
‘It’s a good sign for the future of the Oxford basketball program,? Wagner said.
