Congratulations to Jessica Ojeda, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Oxford Elementary, for her achievement in Oakland County’s ‘Count Your Steps? program.
According to Ojeda’s pedometer ? a device used to measure the number of steps a person takes ? she took more than four million steps during the course of an entire year.
Ojeda was one of 16 students from Oakland County with the highest number of steps in the program.
Ojeda received a certificate of participation from County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and four tickets to Cedar Point.
‘It’s very exciting,? she said.
‘If anybody could do it, we should’ve known it would be her,? said OES Principal Debbie Stout of Ojeda. ‘We’re very proud of her.?
Stout said the Count Your Steps program is great because it helps tackle the issue of childhood obesity. She said Oxford is one of the few school districts in the county that had implemented a health curriculum.
Ojeda said she wore her pedometer almost every day and rarely took it off. She said she noticed a large difference in her number of steps depending on the season. Her steps increased during the summer months and decreased during the winter.
She even had to buy a new pedometer because the one Oakland County originally gave her as part of the program broke from daily wear.
