Goodrich’s varsity girls soccer team is still alive in their quest for the Genesee Area Conference title.
After a scoreless first half against visiting Durand May 16, the Martians scored two second-half goals to defeat the Railroaders, improving their overall record to 8-2-2 and their league record to 6-2-2.
Goodrich’s win, coupled with Montrose’s loss to Lake Fenton the same day, left the two teams in a first-place tie as of press time.
However, Goodrich assistant coach Josh Watson said Montrose has the tiebreaker edge, having defeated and tied the Martians in their two games this season (including a 2-1 win against the Martians at Montrose May 11). As a result, Watson said the Martians have to defeat LakeVille in their scheduled May 19 game, and hope Montrose loses one of their remaining league games, in order to capture the league crown.
Jolynn Zirnhelt scored the game’s first goal at the beginning of the second half, and Jess Engler then followed with another Goodrich goal about 10 minutes later. Durand then scored in the game’s last minute, but it was not enough to overtake the Martians.
Brittany Beard earned the win in goal for the Martians.
‘We pretty much dominated the game, even though we didn’t score in the first half,? Watson said.
The Martians played three games in the Petoskey Tournament Saturday, May 13, and emerged with a 2-1 record for the day’s competition.
Goodrich started the day with a 2-0 loss to Petoskey, as the host Northmen scored both their goals with about 15 minutes left in the second half.
The Martians then bounced back to defeat Greenville 7-2, with Meredith Mayberry accounting for four of the Goodrich goals. Mandy Engler, Arielle Robinson and Cassie Shephard also scored for the Martians.
Goodrich then wrapped up the day with a 3-1 win against Utica, as Mayberry scored two goals and Zirnhelt the other goal for the Martians.
