Youngsters learn basics at BHS football camp

New Brandon varsity football coach Ron Gill and his staff recently had a chance to look at some potential future Blackhawks.
A total of 23 participants signed up for Brandon’s football camp June 13-14 at Brandon High School. The campers signed up to learn one of three positions ? quarterback, running back or wide receiver.
Gill said the campers were divided into eight quarterbacks, seven running backs and eight wide receivers. He was pleased with how the camp went.
‘I thought it was excellent,? he said. ‘It was a great crop of kids and they did a great job.?
The campers worked with the coaches on learning the appropriate fundamentals for their positions:
nQuarterback: three-step drop, five-stop drop, proper throwing mechanics, leadership qualities, option read and keys.
nRunning back: correct stance, handoff techniques, option read and keys, pass protection.
nWide receiver: correct stance, proper catching, different routes (slant, post flag, out, out and up, post), stalk blocking.
Each camper was videotaped during skill sessions and received analysis by their coach.
John Soave, 14, of Ortonville was one of the participants in the camp, taking part in the wide receiver drills.
He said his favorite part of the camp was ‘running routes and getting with the quarterbacks.? Soave’s main goal was to learn as much as he can about the receiver position.
Another Ortonville resident, Josh Tolan, 14, signed up for the quarterback portion of the camp. He said the main things he learned were how to grip the ball and drop back, as well as the techniques of throwing the ball.
Tolan also said he enjoyed ‘working with the receivers (at the camp) to be a better player.?
