The Oxford Women’s Club gave away $10,000 in scholarship money to eight seniors at on May 8 at the American Legion Hall Post 108 off E. Drahner Road.
‘To say the scholarship committee did an outstanding job would not be sayingenough,? said Club President Nancy Wray. ‘I thank the committee who spent a great deal of time, going over many applications.?
The recipients of $1,250 each included Alexandria Corrion, who is undecided on her major, but attending Western Michigan University in the fall; Ashton Hulbert, who will be attending James Madison at Michigan State University and majoring in political science and hoping to go into law afterwards; Courtney Lavender will be attending the University of Michigan and is considering double majoring in business and Chinese; Kelsey Bray will be attending Western University where she will double major in business and dance.
While Kyle Schnettler is unsure of his major he said he will be attending Oakland Community College hoping to continue in his hockey career; Shelby Davis who also is unsure of her major will be continuing her basketball career at Albion College; Steven Parker will be attending Oakland Community College and majoring in criminal justice and law enforcement and lastly Tanna Thronson will also be attending Oakland Community College in the fall, hoping to transfer to Michigan State University and wants to study fashion merchandizing and marketing.
‘It certainly was a pleasure on my part to represent the Women’s Club and award $10,000 to these students,? Wray said. ‘We feel certain they will make us all proud.?
The Women’s Club, which was originally known as the ‘Junior Literary Society? was organized in 1932. The club provides scholarships to Oxford area high school seniors. In addition assistance is provided to the various areas of the community, including donations to FISH, Girl’s State, the All Night Graduation Party and other school sponsored programs.
To raise money to support these various programs the club holds fund-raisers throughout the year including a fashion show in October, a wine tasting event in January, as well as cosponsoring Celebrate Oxford.
The motto of the Women’s Oxford Club is ‘Nothing great was ever achieved with out enthusiasm.?
‘In 2011 we awarded $9,000 in scholarships, in 2012 we awarded $10,000 in scholarships, and now 2013 we again awarded $10,000 in scholarships,? Wray said. ‘All of this was accomplished by women dedicated to assisting young people reach their dreams.?
