Clarkston rolled over an over matched Waterford Mott squad 41-0, on last Friday . The win pushes the Wolves record to 4-2 overall and in the league.
The Wolves controlled the line of scrimmage against the Corsairs on both sides of the ball. Mott was held to 176 total yards of offense. Clarkston ran wild for 277 yards on the ground and passed for 103 yards.
‘We really just wanted to bounce back. I think the guys really pulled together tonight, all around we played a great game,? said senior quarterback Scott Leigh referring in part to last week’s 21-14 loss to Troy Athens.
Senior wide receiver Adam Briceland opened the scoring on Clarkston’s first drive with 7:51 remaining in the first quarter. On fourth down from Mott’s four-yard line Briceland hauled in a pass from Leigh and was able to stretch the ball into the end zone even as defenders swarmed him.
Junior running back Scott Lyons added another touchdown minutes later on a nine yard run making the score 14-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Clarkston then went up 21-0, at 8:55 of the second quarter, as Leigh swept around the fringe of the offensive line on a quarterback keeper play from two yards out.
‘We made a ton of mistakes and we didn’t play with a lot of effort,? said Mott Coach Kon Schmidt. ‘Hats off to Clarkston they played a great game.?
The Clarkston defense easily sniffed out and stopped Mott’s rushing attack all game. Defensively the Wolves recovered two fumbles and limited the Corsairs passing game to 38 total yards.
Clarkston got the ball back quickly after their third score when senior Travis Thompson sacked Mott quarterback Josh Hagen on third and seven to force a punt. Three plays into the Wolves next drive Leigh lofted the ball to junior Brad Goodman for a 41-yard touchdown reception and the rout was on.
‘We wanted to get some kids some playing time that hadn’t been getting a lot,? said Coach Kurt Richardson who added that it was ‘a perfect night? for his team.
A 48-yard touchdown run by junior Mike Kittle at 9:43 of the third quarter started a mass exodus of the Clarkston starters from the game. Junior running back Nick Devault gave Clarkston their final tally when he was able to get around the corner for an eight-yard touchdown run.
Another of Richardson’s goals for the game was to come away from the contest without any injuries. Starting fullback junior Steve McIsaac missed the game with a shoulder injury.
‘We have a lot of depth in the backfield it’s the offensive line that we have to get healthy,? said Richardson.
The Mott faithful, who completely filled their stands, were not given much to cheer about until halftime when their homecoming court was paraded around the track surrounding the football field.
Clarkston’s crowd completely packed the two section visiting team bleachers and occupied much of the sideline as well.
Clarkston’s next contest is their homecoming game Friday Oct. 8 against Rochester High School. As soon as the contest against Mott had wrapped Richardson thoughts had already turned to this week’s game against the Falcons. The game against RHS is Clarkston’s homecoming and everyone on the team is making sure that they are not embarrassed like Mott was.
