The Dragons basketball team began their season with a couple dominating victories last week, with wins over Lapeer East and norther rivals, the Oxford Wildcats.
On Dec. 4, the game against Lapeer East, which ended 85 to 31, saw seniors Chaz Miller put away 16, Connor Stalions netted 14 and Jeremy King score 12 points.
‘Everybody played and it was a great team win,? said Coach Tom Risi. ‘I’m very happy with their effort and they played the whole game. A lot of my juniors got some serious playing time and we’ll need that down the road.?
Last Friday, when the Wildcats visited Dragon territory, they would not score until the second quarter.
The game, which ended 60-21, was hard fought because of the rivalry according to Risi, who added it was great to see his defense working as they practiced.
‘We’re going to need that to win the league,? he said. ‘The most they scored in a period was in the third when they got 13 points and that shows a defensive effort.?
Offensively, Miller had 13 points, King had 12 and junior John McCarty had 10.
‘King’s effort has been a nice surprise this year, because we were wondering who would replace graduate Justin Walukonis. King is tenacious, has the running speed, gives 100 percent and when he closes on a kid he’s not giving them any room.?
Risi also commended junior Zach Green, who has stepped into a leadership role as the teams point guard during an absence of senior Damonte Kruse.
