Congratulations to Oxford High School student Alan Willar, 17, who has been selected to attend the Physics of Atomic Nuclei (PAN) program.
Willar is joining other students from around the state for the PAN event at Michigan State University July 25-29. The PAN program is organized for high school teachers and students to explore topics in modern science, astrophysics and nuclear physics. Students interested in math and science will learn from lectures, discussions and demonstrations.
Willar said his group will get to tour the campus’s many science labs and even get to do experiments, like building their own diffusion cloud chambers and cosmic ray detectors.
‘I’m looking to go into chemical engineering,? he said. ‘Nuclear physics is like chemistry and physics combined and I really like both of those subjects.?
Willar applied for PAN over the internet and received two letters of recommendation from physics teacher David Carson and chemistry teacher Brian Agar at OHS. Willar will be a senior at OHS this fall and plans on attending the University of Michigan for engineering.
